The list of injured Lions continues to grow and this time it’s Munster, Ireland and Lions talisman Paul O’Connell who has been ruled out of the remaining two tests against Australia. It was confirmed earlier today that a lower arm fracture had ended the Munster man’s third Lions tour.
Following another barnstorming performance by the Lions lock that helped see the Lions win the first test 23 – 21, the loss of O’Connell is seen as a major blow not only on the field but also in the dressing room where his leadership is relied heavily upon.
Lions forwards coach Graham Rowntree is hopeful however that O’Connell will remain with the squad for the final three matches of the 2013 tour. Given that this is almost certainly O’Connell’s final tour with the Lions, it would be such a shame to see O’Connell return home early.
Geoff Parling was due to captain the Lions on Tuesday but has been withdrawn from the midweek lineup in expectation of a Saturday start against the Wallabies. Welsh flanker Dan Lydiate will now captain the Lions at AAMI Park.
