The Munster lock faced a similar injury in 2002 which was also corrected by surgery and faced a re-occurrence in 2008 but at that time it was managed without surgery. following a quick recovery then he returned to feature in the knock out stages of the Heineken Cup and Magners League.
The problem arose again this season and the decision was taken to delay surgery, hoping that a similar approach used in 2008 would work but following further consultation it was decided that surgery would be a better option for O’Connell.
“I’m delighted with the way the operation went”, O’Connell said in a recent press statement.
“More importantly, so too are the medical team who carried out the operation and I am very grateful to all concerned.
“My aim now is to start rehab as soon as is practicable. In terms of a return, I’d be looking at early April when hopefully Munster will be in contention for trophies on two fronts.”
Munster play Cardiff Blues in Musgrave Park this Saturday at 19.30 after a successful Christmas period that saw wins over Connacht and Ulster which leaves them 3rd in the Rabo Pro 12 league table.
