• O’Connell returns to action with vintage performance

POCPaul O’Connell returned to first team action for Munster on Saturday in their Rabo Pro 12 clash with Connacht in Musgrave Park. Following a number of recent run outs with the reserve team and club Young Munster, O’Connell finally, after what seems like forever, donned the red of Munster once more and inspired his team to a 22-0 victory over their provincial rivals.

Returning from back surgery to repair a bulging disk, O’Connell looked both fit and hungry and he marked his return with a try and also walked off with the ‘man of the match’ honours. In what can only be described as a statement of intent, O’Connell’s performance is a timely reminder to Warren Gatland that he would be wise not to rule out the Munster lock in this summer’s Lions tour v Australia.
